It’s finally here! Microsoft has at last released the new Mac client for Skype for Business. (Okay, it was released on October 26. But I was on vacation.) As soon as I saw the announcement, I grabbed a copy and one of our test Macs. The same Mac on which I’d tested the Skype Preview earlier in. Mac Skype for Business Client logs I have not seen a snooper version ready for us to read the logs like the Windows version so I had to read the logs through notepad, which can be very tedious to say the least.
What if I participated in the TAP or Preview Program? If you were in the TAP or Preview program and you choose to download the full GA installer from the Download center without opting out of TAP or Preview the MAU update service will move you back to the TAP or Preview program. The current TAP and Preview builds are the same as the GA installer on the Download center (but with different build numbers) so they're current whether on TAP, Preview, or GA. If you want to stay in the TAP or Preview program, you should should *not* download GA bits from the Download center. Conversely if you want to opt out of the TAP or Preview program you should opt out and then go back to the GA build on the DLC. Opting out of TAP or Preview will stop MAU from moving you back to the earlier build.

You then got a message confirming that you’d signed-up successfully: After this, you simply get redirected back to the Skype for Preview Page with the message: “New product opportunities are coming your way soon! Please check back in the coming days to see what opportunities are available for your feedback.” Those lucky enough to get an invite had to wait weeks with many complaints over the on-boarding process and Microsoft warned users to check their spam or junk filters for invites. Once accepted, users received a validation welcome email but some users reported that even after receiving invites, the download was not appearing in the “My Activities” tab and instead simply got a “Nomination Processing” message indicating Microsoft were struggling to keep-up with demand. When you selected to sign-up as an organization, Skype for Business for Mac also did not appear in the list of programs available for testing either. Again, you had to wait for the invitation email from Microsoft first.
Office 365 is fully supported. Skype for Business Server 2015 and Lync Server 2013 are also supported. For full E-911 and Mobility Policy support, Microsoft requires Skype for Business Server 2015 CU4 (coming soon) or Lync Server 2013 CU8 (coming soon). Lync Server 2010 is not supported – we recommend customers to upgrade to Office 365 or Skype for Business Server 2015 with the latest cumulative updates referenced above. No Outlook online meeting function, frequent drop outs, frequent crashes. — Graeme Hutchison (@gdhutchison) There were also issues in Preview 2 with RDP and multi-monitor support, rejoining meetings that are already underway, problems with meeting invite notifications and proxy issues. A few organizations published their initial impressions of Skype for Business for Mac although it’s not clear if this is strictly allowed as part of signing the Microsoft NDA.

Recently, Microsoft really trimmed back the ability to centrally manage Skype accounts, which is understandable as they are steering companies towards Skype for Business. The Windows users can get by with most of the features in the Skype for Business client - it's not a difficult sell as it adds nice address book features, meeting scheduling, and they can still talk with clients that use Skype. But the Mac users cannot do their work without some of these features. And we can't roll out Skype for Business (Mac or Windows) unless we get feature parity (or as close as possible) for the entire company. And since it's more difficult to use normal Skype in a business environment, we get departments trying other tools, notably Slack, putting a lot of pressure on us as an IT group. So we're kind of in the position where Microsoft took away the ability to manage Skype and left us without a viable alternative. Microsoft Teams is great, but just kind of adds to the confusion at this point, as there is a lot of overlap in features.
